It was okay. Some people pull them off better than others. I bet with the right style, I could look decent. That said, in full dress, it’s kind of limiting. Like the back of a Volkswagen.

There was a work event called Burns night (I’m visiting our Scottish office) and about half of folks were wearing kilts so I joined in. The rental wasnt cheap (about $100) but it’s got a lot of kit - like a Porsche options catalog. Socks, shoes with weird laces, a funny pouch thing, sock flags, fake knife, shirt, vest thing, jacket, and kilt of course. Everything comes in various colors and styles.

I prefer clothes that let me tie my shoes without complication.

I believe the colors historically go with different clans. I guess that can be overlooked.

This is true. But basically no one cares anymore. Says the guy at the rental place.

You can usually find rentals for larger families’ tartans. For my dad’s wedding, we rented a kilt with the Scottish national tartan, and I imagine they’d have a few more generic ones. Having one with your own family tartan on it is pretty nice, though.

I believe part of my family has roots in Scotland(along with Ireland and such), it would be interesting to track down the proper tartan.

Normally I wouldn’t believe a guy trying to rent something but in this case I would assume it more about fashion anymore.

There are ways to tie your shoes while you’re wearing a kilt/skirt without giving anyone a free show. Not even being at all sarcastic here, but ask one of your female coworkers/friends/significant other/sisters to show you how. It’s not that hard, but when you’ve never had to think about it before, it makes sense that you wouldn’t get how to do it.

Sort of, a lot of the lore around tartan was made up in the 19th century as a form of fashion craze. Early 18th century is generally the earliest examples in the highlands, then became big after a royal visit in the 1820s.

You ever find yourself sitting down in front of a mirror and crossing your legs to see what that looks like?
